Paired candle stands, paired flower vases and a central incense burner: the five-piece gosoku is the essential furniture of the Jōdo Shinshū altar. This set, blackened and lifted with raised gold relief, keeps the proportions of temple production and has never been placed in use, carrying only the quiet patina of long storage.
The Piece
This five-piece gosoku altar set represents traditional Japanese Buddhist ritual furnishing as used in Jōdo Shinshū practice. Finished in blackened metal with raised gold relief, it comprises a pair of candle stands (rōsokudate), a pair of flower vases (hanatate) and a central incense burner (kōro).
The forms and proportions reflect classical temple-grade production rather than domestic butsudan accessories. The sculptural reliefs depict narrative and floral motifs consistent with Shin Buddhist altar furnishings from the late Edo to early modern transition period.
Each piece is free-standing, with no mechanical joins. The set is compatible with both Nishi and Higashi Jōdo Shinshū usage and suits practitioners, temple restorations and secondary halls, collectors of ritual metalwork and altar implements, and interiors that display authentic Buddhist material culture.
