Signed on the base by Hayama Yuki, this 45 cm porcelain vase joins cobalt underglaze and painstaking overglaze enamels in the sometsuke-iroe manner. Twin ear handles frame a swelling body saturated with small blossoms, a surface whose rhythm of line, color and spacing reveals itself the longer one looks.
The Piece
This commanding floral vase exemplifies Japanese sometsuke-iroe, in which cobalt underglaze foundations are elevated by painstaking overglaze polychrome enamel work. The surface is densely articulated with karakusa (scrolling arabesque) motifs and an all-over field of small blossoms layered into a tapestry, rendered at a scale and precision that signal workshop mastery rather than decorative mass production. Cool blue grounds carry bright white flowers and warm accent tones in controlled saturation, deep blues give the design structural coherence, and each blossom is articulated with intention rather than repetition.
The form is dignified and architectural: a balanced shoulder, a swelling, gently tapering body and a flared mouth kept in proportion, so the decoration breathes without congestion. Subtle ear handles (mimi-tsuki) introduce classical reference and sculptural rhythm, emphasizing symmetry and placing the vessel in the lineage of formal display wares made for alcoves, reception spaces and curated interiors. At approximately 45 cm it suits a console, a low pedestal or floor-adjacent placement, a tokonoma, a gallery interior or a modern architectural setting, where it serves as a focal anchor rather than a supplementary accent.
Floral abundance in Japanese decorative language often stands for prosperity, seasonal continuity and cultivated refinement. An all-over blossom field turns the vase from a motif object into an atmosphere object, creating a complete visual climate rather than a single focal image, while the twin-handle form recalls classical display vessels in which symmetry signals order, balance and curated taste.
Overglaze enamels must be layered carefully so that colors remain crisp and separate, and millefleur density is labor-intensive: the painter has to sustain rhythm, spacing and variation to avoid mechanical repetition. The shoulder transitions hold tension, and a large decorated surface must survive firing without distortion; the stable belly and foot show attention to balance and long-term display stability. The vase pairs with minimal interiors as intentional contrast and with layered interiors as a harmonizing piece, a work that rewards proximity and sustained attention.
