The biker jacket from The Wind, Dai Fujiwara's 2008 Issey Miyake collection made with James Dyson, woven in A-POC jacquard with the outlines of Dyson machines and fitted with round mesh vents.
The Piece
For Spring/Summer 2008, Issey Miyake's creative director Dai Fujiwara invited the engineer James Dyson to work with the studio. The resulting collection, The Wind, translated Dyson's cyclonic technology into clothing: garments with air channels and vents, and fabrics woven with the profiles of fans, motors and cyclones. It was produced in very small numbers and is now a museum-level reference for the meeting of design and engineering.
This jacket follows a motorcycle pattern, with an asymmetric zip, a snap collar, zipped cuffs and a belted hem, but it is made in Miyake's A-POC jacquard of silk and polyester, the dark metallic ground woven with ghostly drawings of Dyson parts. Round perforated vents sit on the chest and at the back hips, under domed flaps. Inside is the grey The Wind ISSEY MIYAKE + dyson label above the Issey Miyake label. The first photograph is the runway look.
Size 2, with a 40 cm shoulder and 52 cm across the chest; it wears like a men's small or a women's medium.
Few fashion collaborations have so completely joined industrial design and clothing. The Wind is regularly cited in exhibitions and design histories, yet the garments themselves are seldom seen; this jacket is an opportunity to own one of the defining experiments of Issey Miyake under Dai Fujiwara.
