A violet wool knit dress from Issey Miyake built with extra sleeves, armholes and neck openings placed around the body, so it can be worn several different ways.
The Piece
The idea that one garment can become many is central to Issey Miyake's thinking, from the A-POC experiments onward. This knitted dress applies it with real wit: alongside the expected neck and sleeves there are additional openings and long, extra sleeves set around the body, so the wearer chooses which ones to use and lets the others hang, wrap or knot.
Knitted in a firm, textured wool in a saturated violet purple, the dress has a high funnel neck, an off-centre slash opening at the shoulder and sleeves that fall well past the hand. Worn conventionally it is a long, gently fitted column; used through the alternative openings it twists and drapes into an asymmetric, sculptural shape, as the mannequin photographs show.
The length is about 108 cm and the knit has enough give to fit sizes medium to large. It is warm enough for autumn and winter on its own and looks strongest with simple black boots and nothing else competing with the colour.
