A scarlet Issey Miyake dress in polyester-cotton twill, cut from broad planes of cloth that fold into winged sleeves, a deep V-neck and a draped cocoon body falling below the knee.
The Piece
Issey Miyake built his reputation on the space between body and cloth. Rather than tailoring fabric to the figure, his studio designs flat geometric pieces that fold and fall into shape when worn, an approach that runs from the 1970s through to the current collections under the black-bar ISSEY MIYAKE label seen here.
This dress is a clear example. A deep V opens the front, and the shoulders extend into broad, folded wings that form the sleeves. Below the bust the cloth gathers at the centre front and drops into deep, sculptural drapes that make a soft cocoon shape, narrowing again towards the hem. At the back a long zip runs down the spine, framed by the same folded planes.
The fabric is a substantial 70% polyester, 30% cotton twill in a true, saturated red, with enough body to hold the folds. It is an occasion dress that needs no jewellery and no further thought.
