Autumn-winter 2018 Issey Miyake trousers in 3D Steam Stretch, where steam lifts a wool and polyester cloth into rings of electric blue relief over a chocolate-brown ground.

The Piece

3D Steam Stretch is one of the defining technical inventions of the Issey Miyake studio under Yoshiyuki Miyamae: the cloth is woven flat and then steamed so that selected yarns shrink and pull the surface into a permanent, springy relief. For autumn-winter 2018 the studio used it on wool blends, giving the effect warmth and a softer hand.

These trousers, style IM84FF529, show it beautifully. A curved yoke of brown ribbing sits at the hips under an elastic waist, the seat and thighs are worked in vivid blue ridges, and the lower legs return to brown before ending in a narrow, ribbed cuff. The raw, fringed edges where the colours meet are part of the design. The cut is a dropped-seat, tapered shape that bends with the knee and needs no ironing.

They pull on easily and stay comfortable all day, and the colour makes them a statement in their own right; pair them with a plain black knit and leather shoes.
