An early Issey Miyake dress from autumn-winter 1983, cut flat from a shirred wool and cotton cloth that ripples like tree bark, with a towering funnel neck that folds into a hood or cape.
The Piece
The early 1980s were the years in which Issey Miyake's research into cloth reshaped how Paris thought about clothing. His team developed textiles with surface and depth, crinkled, shirred and puckered, and then cut them in flat, geometric patterns that only take on form when they meet the body. The red single-colour label inside this dress dates it to that formative period, and it is attributed to autumn-winter 1983.
The cloth is a wool and cotton blend gathered into tight horizontal ridges with black bands, so the surface resembles bark or a ploughed field. The pattern is essentially flat: a vast, high neck rises into a cowl that can stand up, fall as a cape or be pulled over the head, while the body drapes into wide, wing-like sleeves and a straight, knee-length column. From the side and back the volume is dramatic, as the photographs show.
It is labelled free size and works across a broad range of figures. Worn with flat boots and nothing else, it is as striking now as it was on the runway, and it represents the type of 1980s Miyake that museums collect.
