A rounded porcelain jar with a domed, finialed lid, around which a red enamel dragon coils through clouds and flames on a pale ground. Drawing on Ming–Qing imperial revival imagery, it stands approximately 30 cm and makes a composed, symbolic anchor for a console, cabinet or pedestal.
The Piece
The jar takes the classic rounded silhouette of ceremonial storage and display vessels. A sinuous dragon in red enamel coils across a pale ground with cloud and flame accents, and a domed lid with finial completes the symmetrical, authoritative profile. The effect is controlled richness: decorative density balanced by a clear central motif.
In Chinese visual culture the dragon represents imperial authority, vitality and cosmic power, and red amplifies the symbolism with associations of prosperity, celebration and auspicious energy. On a lidded jar the image suggests containment and guardianship, power held and preserved rather than dispersed.
The jar is glazed porcelain with polychrome overglaze enamels over a stable white body. Scales, whiskers and limbs are articulated in layered brushwork rather than flat color, and cloud scrolls create motion and depth across the curve. The lid is proportioned to align with the shoulder, where any imbalance would show at once, and lid and body remain well mated after kiln contraction.
No firm dating is stated. The decorative vocabulary draws on Ming–Qing imperial revival aesthetics, and such pieces are commonly made as high-quality decorative works echoing courtly imagery for modern collectors; the appeal lies in symbolic clarity, painterly confidence and the completeness of the lidded form. It suits console tables, cabinets and shrine-like displays.
