Few subjects are as forceful as Batō Kannon, the horse-headed form in which compassion takes decisive action, and few materials are as rare for sculpture as natural coral. Kumazawa Kizan carved this 10 cm figure with warm translucence and exact facial modeling, and it remains with its signed tomobako and display case.
The Piece
This Batō Kannon figure is carved from natural coral by the respected Japanese master Kumazawa Kizan. The sculpture is a rare convergence of esoteric Buddhist iconography and refined mineral artistry, preserved with its original signed storage box.
Batō Kannon is a wrathful manifestation of Kannon Bosatsu, traditionally invoked for protection against danger, disease and spiritual obstacles. Unlike gentler Kannon forms, Batō Kannon embodies disciplined force, compassion expressed through decisive action.
Hand-carved in natural coral, the figure shows subtle translucency with a warm mineral tonality, precise facial modeling and a balanced stance. Coral Buddhist sculpture occupies a narrow historical window in Japan, where material scarcity and devotional restraint intersect, and works such as this are increasingly recognized as museum-level artifacts rather than decorative objects, for collectors of esoteric Buddhist art and Japanese mineral sculpture.
