Robot Jumbo Kasei Daio «Mars King» de Horikawa, a pilas, juguete New Action, hojalata, caja original, principios de la década de 1970

Jumbo Kasei Daio, known internationally as Jumbo Mars King, belongs to the theatrical end of Horikawa's work: a 30 cm battery robot programmed to walk, stop, open its chest, fire a projecting gun with light and sound, rotate and walk on. This early 1970s example keeps its original Japanese box; its mechanism is untested.

The Piece

Standing approximately 30 cm, the robot pairs the massive rectangular proportions of Japanese mechanical robots with an elaborate sequence of movement, illumination and simulated weapon action, giving it far greater physical presence than the compact clockwork robots of the same period. A tall red body rises from heavy black feet; a compact head with dark optical elements and small metallic details sits above a chest crowded with electronic-style graphics, printed controls, simulated instruments and mechanical panels. Nothing suggests agility; everything suggests power, and the body reads as a machine cabinet able to house motors, gears, switches, lamps and sound-producing components.

The model was engineered around a programmed sequence: the robot advances, stops, opens its chest door, projects a gun mechanism with flashing light and machine-gun sound, rotates its upper body several times, then closes and resumes walking. Earlier mechanical toys usually presented one dominant trick; Jumbo Mars King strings events together like an actor following stage directions. The chest turns from a technological control surface into a door that reveals concealed machinery, the weapon is produced mechanically rather than carried as decoration, and the upper body turns independently above the heavy lower body with an almost turret-like character. Movement, sound and light are layered into a multi-stage spectacle meant to unfold over time, which is why complete operating examples are considerably more desirable than static survivors.

Horikawa consistently treated robots as vehicles for mechanical ideas, experimenting with visible gear trains, television screens, illuminated internal scenes, sparking mechanisms, projecting weapons, rotating bodies, walking mechanisms, sound effects and programmed action. Its robots tend to reveal something: the Gear Robot its gears, a television robot a moving screen, a Monster Robot a creature, and Jumbo Mars King its concealed weaponry. Read conceptually, the lineage runs from the Gear Robot, where machinery becomes visible, through the Television Robot, where imagery becomes mechanical spectacle, and Mars King, where sound, light and action become programmed theatre, to the Monster Robot, where transformation becomes narrative.

Kasei Daio, literally “Mars King”, names a recognizable branch of Japanese robot culture, with period Japanese-market examples under related names and configurations including Kasei Daio, New Kasei Daio and Jumbo Kasei Daio. The Jumbo version's larger scale and elaborate mechanical sequence give it a commanding place in the family; a surviving collector video of the 1970s Jumbo Kasei Daio records the same approximate scale and programmed walking, chest opening, illumination and rotating action. Its construction of tinplate, rubber and polystyrene records the early-1970s transition in which molded plastics joined folded, lithographed sheet metal, allowing shapes that would have been difficult or costly to form in metal while keeping the visual authority of the tin robot. It stands between two manufacturing worlds.

The original carton presents Jumbo Kasei Daio against a dark science-fiction field of vivid rays, celestial imagery and mechanical action beneath large Japanese title typography, with side panels reinforcing the robot's identity and action. Like many vintage Japanese robot boxes it works almost as a miniature film poster, establishing scale, atmosphere and narrative: the toy stands 30 cm high, but on the box it becomes enormous. Seen without nostalgia, the whole is a small electromechanical performance sculpture that occupies space, changes configuration, produces sound and alters light.

Condition

• Authentic vintage condition with age-related wear, accompanied by its original illustrated box; the red, black and metallic design remains visually substantial for display.
• Surface wear, scratches, rubbing, marks, minor soiling and other evidence consistent with long-term preservation.
• The box shows age-related storage wear including surface rubbing, creases, edge and corner wear and discoloration.
• The battery-operated mechanism is presently untested; walking, chest-opening, projecting-gun, illumination, sound and rotating-body actions are the original programmed features of the model rather than present operational guarantees. The photographs give the fullest record of condition.

Authenticity & Care

Dimensions and configuration align with documented examples of the Jumbo Kasei Daio: a specialist Japanese record of an early-1970s Horikawa example of approximately 300 mm, and another documented example of approximately 30 × 18 × 12 cm. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
