Hermès under Martin Margiela meant restraint, reduction and intellectual framing laid over heritage. Here the house's historic Christophe Colomb Découvre L'Amérique carré becomes a wearable archive panel: a women's silk jacket of the late 1990s, made in France, whose art is loud and whose cut is calm.
The Piece
The print, Christophe Colomb Découvre L'Amérique, references one of the house's historic scarf motifs. Margiela did not treat the Hermès archives as nostalgia but as raw conceptual material, and the result is a silk garment that behaves like a wearable archive panel, textile storytelling at museum level.
Martin Margiela served as creative director of women's ready-to-wear at Hermès from 1997 to 2003. Unlike louder reinterpretations of luxury, he approached the house through monochrome discipline, subtle shifts of proportion, textile purity and reverence for the archive without theatrical distortion. His Hermès period is now widely recognized as one of the most intellectually rigorous luxury chapters of the late 20th century, and garments from it have become academic reference points. This jacket belongs to that lineage.
The motif originates in a classic Hermès carré and depicts maritime exploration, ships and navigational symbolism, colonial-era cartographic romanticism and a mythologized narrative of discovery. On a scarf it reads as decoration; scaled across the torso and sleeves of a full silk jacket it becomes immersive, so that the wearer inhabits the history rather than accessorizing with it. The silk surface acts as both canvas and stage.
The 100% silk shell is dense, with superior drape, controlled sheen, depth of pigment absorption and fluid movement when worn. The cotton lining stabilizes the structure and prevents excessive collapse, while calf leather trim adds a grounding weight that keeps the garment from reading as costume. Margiela's restraint shows in the silhouette: relaxed but not oversized, a structured shoulder, clean lines and no ornament beyond the print itself. Silk outerwear from this era is rarer than its knitwear or tailoring, and the jacket unites Hermès maritime heritage, Margiela's intellectual minimalism, high-grade silk construction and French atelier production.
