This is Hermès at its most painterly: not equestrian heraldry or medallion symmetry, but illustrated naturalism rendered in silk. A fox anchors a woodland hunting tableau on deep navy, and a plain navy reverse lets the same jacket turn from staged scene to quiet restraint.
The Piece
The surface reads like a 19th-century European sporting tapestry translated into the house's scarf language. A fox dominates the torso, drawn with almost storybook delicacy; around it are layered hunting horns, foliage, fishing motifs, branches and small fauna across a deep navy ground that gives the composition theatrical contrast. The front graphic also shows a fawn or deer motif, woodland branches and autumn leaves in a scenic composition. Carré in every respect, it reads as a scarf turned bomber, which is strong Hermès house logic.
The fox is not incidental decoration but the compositional anchor. Placed slightly off-center with its head angled downward, it sets up movement across the torso: the eye goes to the animal first and is then led into the surrounding objects, brass hunting horns, reeds, maritime fragments and winter branches. Hermès scarf heritage has long drawn on equestrian sport, maritime navigation, hunting ritual and aristocratic leisure, and this bomber gathers several of those symbolic registers into a single textile field.
The color story is deliberate: a deep navy base, burnished antique-gold accents, muted teal and winter blues, organic browns and autumnal ochres. Under light the silk shifts tonally; navy turns near-indigo, gold reads warmer and the fox's fur gains depth. This is layered dye work rather than flat print.
The proportions are those of a classic reversible bomber, with ribbed collar, cuffs and hem and a slight ballooning at the torso. The plain navy reverse supplies strategic restraint: worn plain, the garment settles into minimal luxury; reversed, it becomes a narrative garment. One side aristocratic spectacle, one side disciplined quiet, which is the core of the Hermès reversible philosophy.
The illustrated wildlife tableau aligns most closely with the late 1980s to early 1990s, when Hermès translated scarf designs into ready-to-wear and explored literal scenic prints, dense storytelling compositions and full-body wildlife illustration. Later Margiela-era pieces moved toward restraint and conceptual abstraction; this jacket belongs to the storytelling chapter.
