An unworn belted motorcycle jacket from Tom Ford’s final season at Gucci, autumn-winter 2004: heavy black buffalo leather, Riri zips and a stand collar, reference 122316 XN063, in size 48.
The Piece
Tom Ford’s decade at Gucci, from 1994 to 2004, turned a faded Florentine leather house into the most desired label in fashion, and his last collection, autumn-winter 2004, is the one collectors return to most. Pieces from that era, especially leather, have become harder to find with every year, and genuinely unworn examples are rare.
This is a belted motorcycle jacket in black buffalo leather, the hide chosen for its deep, irregular grain and natural sheen. The cut follows the classic racing jacket: a low stand collar with a snap tab, a front zip under a snap-down storm flap, a flapped chest pocket and two lower flapped pockets, zipped cuffs and a full self-belt with a darkened metal buckle. The hardware, including Riri zips and Gucci-engraved snaps and pulls, has a smoked, aged finish that Ford favoured for his leather. It is lined in cupro and weighs about 1.6 kg.
It carries the Gucci Group Japan care tag and was made in Italy. A similar but more heavily zipped version was shown on the runway; this calmer model is believed not to have appeared there, which keeps it close to vintage riding jackets and easy to wear.
Size 48 fits a men’s medium to large, with a 54 cm chest and a slim, waisted line.
