A black leather top from Tom Ford's Autumn/Winter 1999 Gucci collection, with a square neck, full sleeves and smocking at the waist, upper arms and cuffs, as worn on the runway.
The Piece
Tom Ford's tenure at Gucci, from 1994 to 2004, turned the house into the most influential name in fashion, and his Autumn/Winter 1999 collection, with its ruched velvet and soft black leather, is one of the most referenced of the era.
This top is cut from very soft black lambskin and gathered by hand-stitched smocking: a band below the bust that releases into a short peplum, panels on the upper sleeves, and deep cuffs that pull the full sleeves in at the wrist. The neckline is wide and square, and it closes with a long zip at the back. The Gucci label and size 38 sit inside. One photograph shows the same top on the runway with a ruched velvet skirt.
Tagged Italian 38, it measures 44 cm across the chest and 44 cm long, a close, short fit for a UK 6 to 8 or US 2 to 4.
Tom Ford's leather pieces from Gucci are scarce in good order, because thin lambskin and smocking demand careful handling. This top has been well kept and remains a graceful, wearable example of the Autumn/Winter 1999 mood.
