Batman enters the Japanese May festival tradition in this made-to-order gogatsu ningyo. Clad in kabuto, menpo and yoroi and enshrined within a cabinet of temple-like form, the figure recasts a modern hero as a guardian of strength and protection for the seasonal display.
The Piece
This piece sits at the meeting point of two display traditions: the disciplined theatre of samurai armor and the modern mythology of Gotham. Presented in a shrine-style cabinet format associated with gogatsu ningyo, the figure reads as a ceremonial presence, helmeted, armored and composed, while its iconography signals a contemporary hero archetype.
Gogatsu ningyo are Japanese May festival displays associated with protection and strength. By translating a pop-culture character into the language of kabuto, menpo and yoroi silhouette, the maker turns familiar symbolism into a seasonal Japanese display object designed to be placed, witnessed and remembered.
