Domed discs of pale jade-green glass, each crowned by a small silver Medusa and ringed with aquamarine crystals, citrine and amethyst batons and seed pearls: a rare and painterly Gianni Versace design.
The Piece
Alongside the gilded coin jewellery that made his name, Gianni Versace produced a smaller run of jewel-coloured pieces in the early 1990s that drew on Byzantine and Renaissance ornament. They paired poured glass and cabochons with pavé crystals and pearls, and they are now among the least common Versace costume designs to surface.
These clip-on earrings belong to that family. Each round dome of translucent jade-green glass, about 4.7 cm across, is set in a silver-tone bezel lined with small aqua crystals, punctuated at four points by square-cut yellow and purple stones and by a single faux pearl. A cast Medusa head sits at the centre in polished silver tone. The reverse of each is stamped Gianni Versace, with a sprung clip and cushioned pad.
They are big, as the period demanded, and best worn with hair swept back or a simple black neckline. The soft green reads beautifully against both tanned and pale skin, and the silver setting makes them easier to wear by day than the more familiar gold pieces.
