A Flying Leather Co. A-2 in heavyweight horsehide, made in the U.S.A. and fully painted with a theatrical pin-up beneath the words “The End of the World”. A modern homage to USAAF personalization, near-unused and only beginning its patina.
The Piece
A richly executed A-2 interpretation in heavyweight horsehide, adorned with a fully painted back panel depicting a theatrical pin-up composition beneath the phrase “The End of the World”. The surface is populated with aircraft tally motifs and period-referential insignia that evoke the USAAF personalization practices of the mid-20th century, an assertive and visually complex example at the meeting point of historical homage and modern craftsmanship.
On the back, “The End of the World” arches like a final curtain over a pin-up figure caught mid-fall, between gravity and glamour, with rows of kill-style markings referencing WWII enemy aircraft types. Those symbols are historically grounded references to wartime aviation marking systems, used here as part of an aesthetic reconstruction of WWII pilot culture; they make the piece visually powerful and also context-sensitive, suited to a knowledgeable collector.
The front balances the drama with structured military identity: a U.S. flag chest patch, a fighter aircraft illustration in P-47 or similar warbird styling, a cartoon squadron-style emblem patch and a leather pilot-wings badge. Read together, it is a composite squadron jacket, less a single pilot's piece than a curated homage to several narratives. The patches are surface-applied rather than stitched through the lining, favoring comfort over strict military construction.
The horsehide carries a dense, slightly pebbled texture that records time as it creases, on a structured A-2 silhouette with period-correct ribbing and a reproduction WWII-style zipper with a bell-shaped end detail. The painted finish will evolve with wear. The jacket is not an original wartime artifact but a modern recreation of that culture, between reproduction and artistic reinterpretation, equally at home worn or displayed.
