From the front, a restrained pair of very dark indigo EVISU jeans; from behind, a vertical collage of oni, festival-mask faces and wagara patterning running down both legs. It is EVISU far from the pocket-logo formula, and in a generous tagged 38 x 34.
The Piece
Some EVISU jeans announce themselves with a giant painted gull; this pair takes a stranger, more theatrical road. The front is almost restrained: deep, dark indigo five-pocket jeans with classic contrast stitching and a clean straight-leg silhouette. Turn the garment around and an elaborate asymmetrical composition runs vertically down both rear legs: vividly colored Japanese demon, oni and festival-mask imagery (the identifying line also names tengu), geometric textile panels, white linework, traditional pattern fragments and one unmistakable EVISU gull on the left rear pocket. The result sits somewhere between Japanese festival graphics, tattoo flash, textile collage, street-art illustration and experimental denim customization.
Instead of one enormous central image, the decoration is broken into stacked visual fragments. Several highly expressive faces appear within rectangular textile panels: a brilliant blue face with red-ringed eyes, an intense orange-red face and, on the opposite leg, a fierce pink-red mask-like figure. Their enormous eyes, broad noses and aggressive expressions evoke oni (鬼), Japanese demon masks, festival masks, theatrical faces and exaggerated traditional character imagery. Rather than naming each face as a specific historical mask without documentation, the imagery is best appreciated as a stylized collection of oni, demon and festival-mask motifs.
The two legs deliberately avoid mirror symmetry. On the left, the white gull on the rear pocket is followed by the large pink-red mask panel, then monochrome Japanese-style geometric patterning and extensive white graphic illustration. The right side opens with a blue demon-like face framed by monochrome textile patterning, followed farther down by the orange-red face and another long run of intricate white graphics. The design combines colored pictorial panels, black-and-white geometric patterns, traditional-looking repeating motifs, linear illustration, symbolic forms and negative space; some sections resemble Japanese woven or printed fabric fragments, others hand-drawn linework. Together they read as boro meeting street art, although this is a deliberately designed fashion treatment rather than traditional boro repair.
The monochrome sections matter as much as the colored masks. Repeated circular florals, lattice arrangements, stripes and small geometric motifs recall wagara, the broad family of traditional Japanese patterns used in kimono, textiles, crafts and architecture, and they keep the composition from turning cartoonish: color block, pattern, illustration, then color again, read downward like a vertical scroll. Against that density, the single white gull works almost as EVISU's signature at the corner of an artwork, small enough not to dominate yet immediately identifying the denim heritage.
The denim appears exceptionally dark and relatively clean, a black-blue gallery wall for the red, blue, orange and white imagery. The front carries no logo to compete with the rear: two curved front pockets, coin pocket, copper-tone rivets, belt loops, golden contrast stitching and a button fly. The substantial straight silhouette gives each panel room to breathe, where a skinny cut would compress the imagery, and the tagged 38-inch waist and 34-inch length make this a generously sized example at a time when many older Japanese designer pieces survive mainly in smaller waists. Oni have moved over centuries through religious narrative, folk belief, painting, theater, festivals, masks and tattooing, their faces carrying power, danger, rebellion, protection and chaos, which makes them a natural fit for EVISU's long habit of carrying Japanese mythology, pattern, calligraphy and tattoo imagery on denim.

Reading the Lot Number
The leather-style waistband patch reads Lot 2008, Size 38 x 34. Here 2008 is the EVISU lot or model designation rather than necessarily the year of manufacture: EVISU has used numbered lots across different denim cuts, and Lot 2008 is generally associated with a classic regular or straight silhouette. The pair is therefore presented as EVISU Lot 2008 jeans, not as 2008-year jeans, and its production period is treated separately unless further manufacturing information appears.
EVISU sizing and denim shrinkage vary between production eras, washes and individual garments, so the tagged size is a reference; compare against a pair that already fits rather than relying on contemporary Western sizing.
Authenticity & Care
The tan leather-style waistband patch reads Lot 2008 and Size 38 x 34, and the white EVISU gull marks the left rear pocket. Lot 2008 is the EVISU lot or cut, generally associated with a classic regular or straight silhouette; the piece itself is undated. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
