COTE MER sets a grid of vintage obi silk brocade, threaded with metallic gold, into the back of a black denim trucker jacket and frames it with two vertical zippers. The result is a dialogue between ceremonial Japanese textile and Western workwear, offered here in excellent condition.
The Piece
In this reconstructed garment, COTE MER brings ceremonial Japanese textile heritage into conversation with the enduring archetype of Western industrial denim. The jacket is less an article of clothing than a composed object: an intentional reassembly of cultural fragments, each with its own chronology, unified within a sharply defined contemporary silhouette.
Its foundation is a classic black denim trucker jacket with a cropped, box-proportioned body, structured yoke, reinforced seams with contrast thread, two button-flap chest pockets and a button front. Denim, historically tied to labor, durability and democratic wear, grounds the opulence that unfolds across its surface.
The back is dominated by a rectilinear patchwork grid of vintage obi silk brocade. Each fragment shows a dense weave and luminous surface, and metallic gold threads catch the light with subdued brilliance. Kikko tortoiseshell geometry, stylized chrysanthemums and scrolling karakusa arabesques keep their encoded meanings in their new setting. The grid recalls byobu folding screens, textile samplers and archival fragments remounted for preservation, yet here it is worn and in motion.
Two vertical zippers frame the central panel, introducing a rigid architectural axis against the organic flow of silk and a deliberate tension between softness and structure, heritage and industry. The sleeves continue the dialogue asymmetrically: silk kimono sections with floral and geometric patterns are set against graphic textile inserts bearing the COTE MER name in bold type, so that the eye keeps moving across the garment.
The obi, the most structurally and symbolically significant element of traditional Japanese dress, was made for formal occasions, its tight weave and metallic thread signifying status and ceremony. Cut and recomposed here, it becomes a wearable artifact. Worn with neutral black, charcoal or ivory layers and minimal competing pattern, the jacket turns its wearer into a moving exhibition surface, asserting presence without excess.

Atelier Context
COTE MER works within a lineage of reconstruction fashion, narrative garments and post-deconstruction aesthetics, alongside frameworks such as Kapital's heritage fragmentation, Readymade's military recontextualization, Greg Lauren's textile collage and Mihara Yasuhiro's conceptual hybridization. Its distinction is a direct engagement with authentic Japanese ceremonial textiles as primary material rather than reference, so the garment is a reconfiguration rather than a reproduction.
The piece speaks to several audiences at once: the textile scholar who reads obi fragments, weave density and motif lineage; the streetwear archivist drawn to the house's reconstruction philosophy and rarity; the editorial stylist seeking immediate visual impact; and the boutique curator looking for a storytelling display piece.
