Pale, heavily washed workwear denim meets a mosaic of kimono and obi-style textile in gold, ivory, vermilion, green, silver and black. COTE MER's reconstruction turns the back into something close to a folding screen in streetwear form, with paulownia crests at its heart and branded logo panels running down both sleeves.
The Piece
The front retains the architecture of a classic trucker jacket: pointed collar, metal-button closure, twin flap chest pockets, front welt pockets, waistband, metal adjustment hardware and shaped vertical seams. The wash runs from pale sky blue to deeper indigo shadows along folds, seams and pocket edges, and the collar and selected edges show intentional or naturally developed fraying. From the shoulders outward, the garment becomes far more theatrical.
Both sleeves have been rebuilt from multiple textile systems: metallic gold brocade, vermilion and orange satin-like cloth, pale lavender figured textile, green woven wave-pattern panels, ivory and silver florals and graphic black fabric with large white COTÉ MER lettering, finished in black rib-knit cuffs. One sleeve moves through orange-red, antique gold and ivory before reaching its logo panel; the other combines lavender, metallic embroidery and green wave geometry. They do not mirror each other, so each arm has its own composition.
Across the back, a rectangular grid of mixed Japanese textiles fills the body between yoke and waistband, framed by two long black zipper tapes with silver-toned teeth that continue below the hem as loose, moving verticals. Gold fields, paulownia crests, radiating fan-like geometry, floral brocade and stylized waves form a collage that reads almost like a modern Japanese folding screen. It is joined patchwork, not a printed reproduction, with visible seam lines and changes in weave direction; the zippers act chiefly as design and reconstruction elements rather than an ordinary closure.
This is not an untouched vintage trucker but a contemporary Japanese reconstruction, its irregular placement, unfinished transitions and contrasting materials integral to the design. It sets Japanese ceremonial textile beside washed American workwear, Harajuku street fashion, punk reconstruction, graphic sportswear and contemporary textile collage, letting each material keep its own history, sheen and rhythm.

Condition
- Pre-owned reconstructed condition with intentional rawness and visible signs of wear.
- Heavy fading and tonal variation throughout the denim; fraying along the collar and selected denim edges.
- Irregular and exposed patchwork seams, raw textile transitions and minor pulled threads within the brocade.
- Localized surface marks and discoloration; small abrasions around the front pockets and body.
- Light wear to the printed sleeve graphics and minor marks on the black COTÉ MER panels.
- Unevenness around the reconstructed hem and zipper extensions; natural creasing and softening from previous wear.
- Much of the irregularity is integral to the design. The major patchwork sections, metal buttons and visible zipper components remain present; expect the complex surface of an individually reconstructed garment rather than pristine denim.
Kiri-Mon and Motifs
The most recognizable repeated emblem is the kiri mon, or paulownia crest, appearing as a white flowering form on green geometric grounds. Paulownia has a long history in Japanese decorative and heraldic design; museum collections document the crest across lacquerware, metalwork and textiles, including historic associations with Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later official usage. Paulownia and chrysanthemum motifs have both appeared extensively in historic Japanese textiles.
Because the textiles have been cut and recomposed, the motifs no longer form one continuous ceremonial narrative; their power comes from fragmentation, formal symbols lifted from their original garments into modern streetwear.
- Radiating ivory-and-gold geometry resembling an opened fan or rising light
- Black cloud or wave-like forms and green repeating arcs from traditional wave-pattern vocabulary
- Chrysanthemum-like floral roundels and metallic botanical brocade
- Fragmented circular and cartwheel forms, red-and-white cords or curved bands, and formal gold fields
Fit and Styling
A compact, slightly cropped trucker with a moderately generous chest and comparatively short body and sleeves; it may suit an approximate unisex S–M, more relaxed on a smaller frame and more fitted on a broader one. Compare the measurements with a jacket that fits comfortably. The pale denim works with black wide-leg trousers, distressed or coated denim, minimal white or black layers, leather boots, platform footwear, punk and grunge silhouettes and contemporary kimono-inspired dress; laid flat, the back reads as a framed patchwork composition.
Authenticity & Care
COTÉ MER branding is integrated into both lower sleeves in oversized white lettering; the neck label is absent or unreadable, with a rectangular tonal shadow inside the collar where a label may once have been. Construction matches the label's documented practice of setting kimono textiles over reconstructed, hand-treated denim. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
