A late 1980s Comme des Garçons blouson that turns into a cape: the arms pass through slits in the sides, beneath a wide caped shoulder, believed to date from around 1989.
The Piece
By the late 1980s Rei Kawakubo had moved from the raw drape of the early years to sharper, sculptural experiments with familiar garments. This piece takes a simple zip blouson and reshapes it into a cape, a garment the wearer steps into rather than puts on.
In a black wool with a subtle texture, it has a small rounded collar, a full front zip and a broad, rounded cape that falls over the shoulders. The arms emerge through openings at the sides, and the ribbed band at the hem holds the volume close to the waist. Inside, a black quilted lining adds warmth.
The main label reads Comme des Garçons; the composition tag is not present, so the exact season is given as believed, around 1989. It is cropped, with a body length of about 45 cm.
It looks best over a slim knit and a long skirt or wide trousers, letting the cape set the silhouette.
