Glass, metal and devotion meet in this 32 cm Shakyamuni, worked in the Chinese Jingtai-lan manner of cloisonné over copper. Warm gilt lights the face and upper torso, while a robe of many-colored blossoms holds the deep sheen that only fired enamel can give, making the figure both sacred image and decorative art.
The Piece
A seated Shakyamuni Buddha rendered in jewel-toned cloisonné enamel over copper, a luminous devotional figure whose floral robe reads like a textile made of glass and light. The face and upper torso are finished in warm gilt tones, while the garment is covered in multicolored blossoms associated with the Chinese cloisonné (Jingtai-lan) tradition and later Qing-style revival aesthetics.
The object bridges disciplines. As a sacred image it offers calm authority; as decorative art it offers the depth and sheen of enamel, with subtle shifts where the wire partitions and enamel pools catch shadow.
Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, the awakened teacher whose life and teachings form the foundation of Buddhism. In art he is often shown seated in composed stillness, his hands forming gestures that communicate protection, teaching or meditative stability.
