The Piece

Citizen's Promaster line sits at the intersection of industrial utility and Japanese engineering pride, designed for maritime professionals, rescue divers and extreme-environment users. Paired with Neon Genesis Evangelion, it becomes a certified 200m diver, a long-life solar-powered instrument and a cultural artifact carrying the series' themes of identity, burden and isolation.

The EVA-01 colorway is semiotic rather than decorative. Purple recalls Unit-01's liminal state, neither machine nor human; acid-green accents evoke NERV bio-hazard symbology and LCL fluid; bold numerals and arrow markers echo cockpit HUD graphics and Angel-warning interfaces. The dial keeps Promaster legibility and lets the tool-watch identity dominate, with Evangelion as an undercurrent rather than surface branding, much as the series holds intense emotion within rigid systems.

Citizen's Eco-Drive, a solar-charged quartz system, removes battery decay from the equation, keeps accuracy consistent across temperature variation and is designed for decades of operation without intervention. The 52.5 mm case is intentional: Promaster divers are built for visibility in turbulent, low-light water, and the scale follows professional maritime design rather than fashion. The black IP coating on the stainless steel resists corrosion and reinforces Evangelion's industrial militarism.

Released in 2020 as a 400-piece Japan-exclusive edition from a major Japanese manufacturer, the watch belongs to an early phase of anime collaborations. Many examples were worn, gifted or separated from their boxes, and complete, unused examples are increasingly scarce.
