The Piece

Cruise 2005 is one of the most quoted Chanel collections of the Lagerfeld years. Karl reworked the house codes as a collegiate wardrobe, with blazer crests, monogram badges and tweed edged like a school jacket, and the black crest blazer from this season is widely associated with the Chanel looks of The Devil Wears Prada (2006). The resurgence of that film has made these jackets some of the most searched Chanel pieces of the past year.

This is the reference P24937, in a dense black wool with a soft, felted handle. On the left breast sits the emblem that gives the jacket its name: a black shield outlined in gold embroidery, the word COCO stitched across the top, and a silver camellia, Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite flower, at its centre. Every edge, from the peaked lapels to the pocket flaps, cuffs and hem, is finished with a frayed black and white tweed ribbon.

The cut is a close, slightly cropped blazer with a two-row button front, fastened with gilt CC buttons engraved with the house monogram, and three working buttons at each cuff. Made in France and fully lined, it measures 39 cm across the shoulders, 45 cm pit to pit and 68 cm in length.

Worn with jeans and a white shirt it is pure Lagerfeld-era Chanel; over a slip dress it becomes evening. Either way it is the kind of Chanel jacket people stop you to ask about.
