A Carol Christian Poell kangaroo leather jacket, reference LM/2699, in a mottled grey-green finish with a high funnel collar, offset fly closure and the creased, almost liquid surface that only his leathers achieve.

The Piece

Carol Christian Poell, the Austrian designer working in Milan, is the most uncompromising of the avant-garde leather makers. He has never staged a conventional show, makes very little, and treats each skin with techniques of his own: object-dyeing finished garments, rubber-coating, stitch-free bonding and the use of unusual hides such as kangaroo and bison. Kangaroo is prized for being far stronger than cowhide at a fraction of the weight, which allows his jackets to drape like cloth while still taking on deep, permanent creasing.

This is the LM/2699 jacket in kangaroo leather. The colour is a shifting grey-green, darker in the folds and lighter where the surface has been polished by handling, so the whole jacket looks weathered rather than simply dyed, in the manner of the house’s garment-dyed leathers. A tall funnel collar stands up around the neck and closes with a tab; below it a concealed, offset front fastening keeps the face of the jacket clean. Set-in slanted pockets sit low on the body, and the inside is lined in polyester.

At 74 cm long with a generous 57.5 cm chest, the cut is a long, straight jacket that falls below the hip, roomy enough for layering over a heavy knit, true to the large tagged size 56.

Poell’s leathers are made in tiny numbers and seldom resurface in Japan, and kangaroo pieces in a large size are scarcer still.
