One face of this CAB Clothing Deluxe sukajan is fierce and mythological, with twin dragons coiling across quilted black satin beneath a tiger and a diving eagle. The other is bright and geographic: a golden map of Japan crowded with named cities, ports and postings beneath Mount Fuji. Both are complete and worthy of display.
The Piece
The black face has the energy of a vintage tattoo flash sheet translated into satin and thread. Its body is black satin stitched with a large diamond quilting grid in contrasting golden thread that continues across front and back, so the embroidered animals sit over a visible architectural framework. Across the back, two long orange dragons coil through green cloud scrolls in a dense circular formation that seems to rotate across the center, their cream and pale-gray underbellies breaking the orange scale work and yellow-gold horns, white whiskers and claws sharpening their expressions. Heavy thread coverage gives the bodies texture and relief; paired rather than single, the dragons suggest opposing energies, competition, balance or two forces circling a shared center.
On the front, an eagle or hawk descends on one chest with broad plum, lavender, burgundy and cream wings, head lowered and claws extended in a hunting posture, while a roaring tiger head in vivid yellow, orange, black, white and red, jaws open and fangs bared, faces it on the other: vision and ferocity. Wide quilted gold satin panels interrupted by narrow black stripes run along the shoulders and raglan sleeves, matching gold pocket welts echo them, and rib knit in pink, black and cream brings an unexpected flash of color.
Reversed, the jacket turns to luminous golden-yellow satin with broad silver racing stripes from shoulder to cuff and ochre, black and cream ribbing. The back becomes a richly labeled map of Japan, the island chain outlined in warm yellow thread and the place names embroidered in blue, green, cream and brown: Sapporo, Aomori, Misawa, Hachinohe, Sendai, Maizuru, Kyoto, Ota, Tachikawa, Tokyo, Yokohama, Yokosuka, Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, Kure, Etajima, Gamagori, Hakata, Kokura, Beppu, Sasebo, Nagasaki and Okinawa. Like the early tour jackets it recalls, the map is expressive rather than to scale, a portable record of journeys, naval ports and military postings. Above it, beneath the large embroidered word “Japan,” Mount Fuji rises in pale blue and white among pink and green clouds, and at the lower right a small golden dragon emerges from swirling pink, cream and lavender waves ringed with small decorative circles, linking the map to the dragons of the other face.
The golden front carries a long-feathered bird in blue, lavender, cream and orange flying over stylized water, a phoenix, exotic eagle or hō-ō-inspired figure of grace and renewal, opposite a compact golden dragon in pink, blue and cream cloud scrolls, a sky-and-water dialogue across the chest. The jacket appears to be a later vintage or archive-era CAB Clothing Deluxe piece from the Japanese revival of classic souvenir-jacket design rather than an immediate-postwar original, preserving the spirit of early map jackets with the saturated color and graphic animals of later amekaji and wagara fashion. Hung open, the two faces read as companion panels; worn, the quilted black absorbs light while the gold reflects it.
