A Buzz Rickson's civilian A-2 in aniline horsehide, transformed through a full program of hand-applied customization. Donald Duck in flight gear fills the back, while the front builds a complete 8th Air Force narrative of patches, sleeve script and a tribute pilot name.
The Piece
This Buzz Rickson's A-2 flight jacket is executed in aniline-finished horsehide and has been transformed through a comprehensive program of hand-applied, multi-zone customization. The reverse presents a bold Donald Duck “Fighting Duck” nose art composition, referencing the wartime use of animated figures in aviation culture, while the front integrates layered insignia: squadron emblems, a named pilot designation and sleeve markings associated with the 8th Air Force.
The back shows Donald Duck in flight gear, in the direct lineage of WWII nose art, set on a bright yellow disc whose high-visibility, poster-like impact anchors the composition. Kill markings rendered as crosses add an aggressive visual rhythm, and the iconography references the 336th Fighter Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group. Less a matter of pin-up symbolism than of morale and humor, it is military cartoon iconography with a historical backbone.
The front is a fully built narrative: a US flag shoulder patch, 8th Air Force-style insignia, a squadron patch with an aggressive bird motif, the sleeve script “Mighty Eighth” and a named pilot tag for Capt. D.R. Emerson, applied as a tribute.
Donald Duck nose art was used during WWII, when Disney characters took part in morale campaigns, squadron identity and the psychological grounding of aircrews. The aniline horsehide is luminous, its grain still intact and its surface sheen strong, so that the piece stands as a compelling intersection of Japanese reproduction craftsmanship and historically informed reinterpretation, of interest to military, Disney and fashion collectors alike.
