Carved in wood and attributed to Inamura Kaoru, this tableau shows Jibo Kannon, the motherly form of the bodhisattva, emerging from a lotus among pods and leaves. Kept within a fitted display case, it serves as a small, self-contained altar for a study or tokonoma, where mercy and refuge are given quiet, sculptural form.
The Piece
A quietly dramatic devotional tableau centered on Jibo Kannon, the Compassionate Mother aspect of Kannon, rendered as a refined wood sculpture group staged among lotus forms. Conceived as a self-contained environment rather than a single figure, the composition reads like a private micro-altar: Kannon rising from the lotus, surrounded by pods and leaves that turn the work into an iconographic landscape of mercy, protection and maternal refuge.
The carving language is deliberately Japanese, with controlled drapery rhythm, softened facial planes and a calm inward gaze that invites contemplation. The lotus, emblem of purity and awakening, anchors the spiritual meaning, while the diorama staging gives the deity space and calm gravity, suited to a tokonoma, study or quiet corner where a devotional focus is wanted without a full household altar.
Presented in a fitted display case, the work is protected, ready to install and visually unified as a preserved altar vignette. The case also shields the fine carved edges and delicate lotus elements from dust and incidental contact.
