Small in scale yet theatrical in spirit, this shishi incense burner gives the guardian lion an open-mouthed, animated expression and a tail that rises like flame. Its silhouette carries across a room, letting the piece serve as both incense vessel and cabinet sculpture within a long tradition of protective imagery.
The Piece
A compact but theatrical bronze-toned shishi incense burner (koro), formed as a guardian lion with a dramatic flame-like tail and an animated, open-mouthed expression. The silhouette is designed to read strongly from across a room, functioning equally as censer and cabinet sculpture.
In Japanese visual culture the shishi is a protector motif associated with thresholds and the warding off of misfortune. As a koro, the object also belongs to incense culture, the meeting point of atmosphere, ritual and decorative metalwork.
