Sukajan reversible Tedman BRM Bakuretsu Ranman Musume Matsuri Mikoshi, vehículo de Dios, satén, M-L

A whole festival in thread. The burgundy face carries a crowd heaving an ornate mikoshi beneath the words “Vehicle of God”; reversed, sleek black satin distills the matsuri into one monumental 祭 character and the words “Japanese Tradition.” This Bakuretsu Ranman Musume model trades the familiar tiger and dragon for a living Shinto ritual.

The Piece

A reversible sukajan by Bakuretsu Ranman Musume, also known as B-R-M or BRM, the label operated by Efu Shokai Corporation, transforming one jacket into two expressions of Japanese festival culture. The design is identifiable through Japanese collector records as the Bakuretsu Ranman Musume Matsuri / Mikoshi reversible model, pairing the black “Japanese Tradition” face with the burgundy “Vehicle of God” festival scene. Sleeves, chest, back, ribbing and color blocking all work together, so the garment feels less like outerwear than a festival procession preserved in thread.

The black face is the more restrained presentation, though unmistakably graphic. Large ivory embroidery spells Japanese Tradition across the back; at the center sits a circular orange field with a stylized white 祭, matsuri or festival, surrounded by pale silver and ivory detailing, sweeping white currents and smaller English inscriptions concerning quality, clothing design and the Efu Shokai company. The lower back is embroidered “efu shokai corporation” with the company’s Tokyo address and a small square Bakuretsu Ranman Musume seal. One sleeve carries a near full-length stream of ivory currents, droplets, waves and abstract ornament; the other bears a large orange festival roundel with 祭 and the words “Bakuretsu-Ranman-Musume Works from 1997.” The chest adds B-R-M lettering, a smaller festival emblem, “Fine Quality” and “Japanese Tradition” text and further wave motifs, with welt-style hand pockets and black rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband.

The reverse is the theatrical reveal: a deep wine-red or burgundy satin body framed by ivory sleeves, matching burgundy shoulder panels, gold piping and striped cream, brown and black ribbing. Large ivory embroidery reads Vehicle of God across the upper back, and below an ornate mikoshi rises above a tightly packed crowd of carriers in pale blue, brown, ochre, white and black: dozens of bodies with arms raised, feet overlapping and garments twisting as they push beneath the shrine. A red-orange disc behind the mikoshi acts like a rising sun, festival lantern or sacred halo, quietly echoing the orange roundel on the black face, and “Bakuretsu Ranman Musume” runs along the lower edge. From a distance it reads as a mass of motion; up close, individual heads, limbs, garments, ropes, shrine fittings and architectural details emerge.

A mikoshi is a sacred portable shrine carried through the streets during Japanese festivals, a temporary vehicle for the local kami that lets the deity leave its home shrine and travel through the community; Japanese cultural and tourism sources describe deities being symbolically placed within it before it is carried, often with vigorous movement and chanting. “Vehicle of God” is therefore a direct poetic reading of the mikoshi’s ritual purpose. The design emphasizes the people carrying it, capturing collective effort, local identity, rhythm, devotion and neighborhood solidarity. Tigers, dragons, eagles and koi are common in sukajan; a procession of this density is considerably less so, giving the piece a documentary, community-centered character.

Several embroidery approaches meet here: dense filled satin stitch for the festival characters, lettering and roundels, giving them a raised, almost appliquéd presence; fine figurative stitching for the faces, hands, legs, clothing, shrine fittings, roof elements, ropes and layered carriers; long linear stitching for the black-side currents, which keeps the monochrome face light; and silver-gray and pale ivory threads that read as metallic against the black satin. Lettering ranges from large curved capitals and a brush-style Japanese character to script, corporate identification, abbreviated B-R-M branding and small descriptive text. Neither face is a mere lining: each has a complete front, designed back, finished sleeves, functional pockets, coordinated ribbing and deliberate color blocking.

• The zipper looks complete and the rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband look intact.
• Natural surface creasing from folding and storage, light signs of previous handling, and minor waviness or gentle puckering around heavily embroidered areas; the smooth satin shows wrinkles, reflections and subtle tonal changes with the angle of view.
• No major tear, obvious large stain or apparent large-scale thread loss is visible in the photographs, which form an essential part of the condition record.

Label Background

Efu Shokai operates the official Bakuretsu Ranman Musume label alongside its other Japanese amekaji and tattoo-inspired clothing lines. The label holds a distinctive place in Japanese wa-gara and amekaji fashion, its jackets combining legends, samurai and warrior imagery, folklore, festival scenes, tattoo aesthetics, Buddhist or Shinto references, dramatic English phrases, dense multicolored embroidery and reversible construction: modern illustrated canvases rather than simple replicas of postwar souvenir jackets.

The souvenir jacket began as a postwar meeting point between Japanese embroidery and American military clothing; amekaji refined and reinterpreted such garments through local craft and imagery, and from the late 1990s through the early 2010s Japanese brands increasingly placed traditional motifs, legends, festivals, warriors and tattoo imagery onto casual wear. Heavy all-over embroidery, highly polished reversible satin, oversized English wording, numbered Japanese sizing traditions, dense sleeve decoration and contrasting retro ribbing place this jacket in that wa-gara revival; no exact production date is visible.

Fit Guidance

The suggested range is approximately unisex M-L. Japanese sukajan can fit shorter and more compactly than modern Western outerwear, especially in body length and at the ribbed hem; the raglan construction gives some flexibility across the shoulders, but flat garment measurements are the reliable guide. Useful comparison points are underarm-to-underarm chest width, back length from collar seam to hem, raglan sleeve length from collar to cuff, hem width, upper-arm width and cuff opening.

Wearing Notes

The black face suits classic amekaji: faded selvedge denim, a plain white or black tee, engineer or service boots, canvas sneakers and military-inspired trousers. Let the burgundy mikoshi face lead with black jeans, charcoal trousers, plain cream knitwear, dark boots and minimal accessories, or set the compact bomber against wide-leg trousers, cargo pants and chunky sneakers; the graphic black side also sits easily with black denim, silver jewelry and leather boots.

For display, hang the mikoshi side on a broad hanger with the sleeves relaxed outward so the full crowd scene shows; the black face, with its centered 祭 emblem and symmetrical back, also works well as wall-mounted textile art.

Authenticity & Care

The black face carries B-R-M lettering, the “efu shokai corporation” inscription with the company’s Tokyo address and a square Bakuretsu Ranman Musume seal, and the design matches Japanese collector records of the BRM Matsuri / Mikoshi reversible model. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
