A reversible sukajan of the early 2000s, made in the spirit of a scarce postwar souvenir-jacket motif. Black velveteen carries a cracked skull entwined with serpents beneath a spider web; the quilted reverse offers an idealized embroidered Japan of Mount Fuji, pagoda, bridge and sail.
The Piece
The black velveteen side centers on a cracked skull entwined with two serpents beneath a finely embroidered spider web, with crossed bones completing the composition and the word “Japan” above in sweeping silver script. Matching dragon-like serpents extend along both sleeves amid curled clouds and winged details, and two smaller skulls decorate the chest, carrying the dark imagery around the whole garment.
This skull, snake and web composition belongs to one of the most unusual branches of sukajan design. In place of the familiar tiger or eagle it adopts a memento mori vocabulary: the serpents seem to grow from the fractured skull while the web behind them suggests age, danger and entrapment. A restricted palette of ivory, taupe, gray and tarnished-silver thread rises from the deep black pile almost like moonlit bone. Skull and crossed bones speak of mortality and defiance; the serpents of transformation, poison, rebirth and concealed power; the web of time and the fragile architecture of fate; and the sleeve dragons add a supernatural note that joins Western memento mori to the visual language of Japanese souvenir-jacket art.
Turned inside out, the atmosphere changes completely. The reverse is built in diamond-quilted blue-black satin with contrasting quilted ivory sleeves; its back depicts Mount Fuji, a tiered pagoda, pine-covered rocks, an arched bridge, flowing water and a distant sailing boat, framed by the geometric stitching like panels of a textile picture scroll, with smaller mountain-and-cloud compositions across the chest. Fuji stands for permanence, sacred geography and Japan itself; the pagoda evokes Buddhist architecture; pines symbolize endurance and longevity; the bridge suggests passage and the boat travel, distance and memory. The two faces set mortality against nostalgia, darkness against landscape, danger against remembrance.
The design draws directly on an exceptionally scarce mid-century motif, but the clean machine embroidery, regular diamond quilting, synthetic velveteen and satin, zipper construction and overall finishing place it in the later Japanese sukajan revival: it preserves the visual drama of a rare 1950s design while belonging to the revival movement.

- Natural creasing and compression across the velveteen, with changes in pile direction and uneven surface sheen.
- Wrinkling throughout the quilted satin and age-related discoloration to portions of the ivory sleeves.
- Wear and color variation to the rib-knit trim; small thread irregularities and localized embroidery wear.
- General softness and distortion from previous use and storage, with light marks, rubbing and handling wear throughout.
- No major structural tear is apparent in the photographs, which form an essential part of the condition record.
Fit Notes
The jacket has a compact vintage body with long raglan sleeves. Compare the measurements with a similar jacket that fits comfortably rather than relying only on a general size conversion.
Collecting Appeal
Displayed from the back, the serpents and fractured skull form a dramatic centerpiece; reversed, the jacket becomes a quieter embroidered landscape of mountains, architecture and water.
