Created with Matthew Williams and 1017 ALYX 9SM, this Royal Oak strips away almost every familiar dial convention and lets the architecture speak. Solid 18K yellow gold runs from case to bracelet to dial; one of only 194 pieces, the example offered here is unworn and complete with its limited-edition certificate.
The Piece
Some collaborations add; this one subtracts. Ref. 15550BA.OO.1356BA.02 removes the Tapisserie pattern, the traditional hour markers and the date. What remains is a field of vertically satin-finished yellow gold framed by the octagonal bezel: three hands, two signatures, eight bezel screws and the unmistakable Royal Oak silhouette. It is less decorative than a conventional Royal Oak yet somehow more conspicuous, because once the distractions are gone the gold has nowhere to hide.
The collaboration translates the highly disciplined industrial aesthetic of Matthew Williams and 1017 ALYX 9SM into Royal Oak form. The Audemars Piguet signature sits in the upper half of the dial and the 1017 ALYX 9SM signature below the hands; there are no applied indexes, and three yellow-gold Royal Oak hands give hours, minutes and central seconds. Reduced almost to abstraction, the dial forces attention back to proportion, finishing and material: the bezel feels larger, the hands more sculptural, and the bracelet appears to continue through the dial. Rather than placing a designer logo on an existing configuration, the collaboration materially altered the dial architecture, which gives the reference real standing as a collaborative design object.
The 37mm case flows directly into an integrated 18K yellow-gold bracelet, so watch head and bracelet read as a single object. At approximately 37mm across and only 9.1mm thick, it avoids the oversized proportions of many modern luxury sports watches and relies on material, finishing and silhouette for presence. Case, dial, bezel, bracelet, clasp, hands and rotor all speak the same monochromatic yellow-gold language.
Inside is Audemars Piguet Calibre 5909, a selfwinding movement developed for compact contemporary Royal Oak proportions, with 29 jewels and 174 components, 28,800 vibrations per hour and approximately 60 hours of power reserve. Through the sapphire exhibition caseback it is complemented by a specially designed 22K yellow-gold winding rotor with collaboration-specific detailing.
Production was limited to 194 pieces worldwide, giving the reference a substantially different collector profile from regular-production models and marking a specific moment in Audemars Piguet's engagement with contemporary fashion and industrial design. Founded in Le Brassus in 1875, the house introduced the Royal Oak in 1972; that this collaboration can remove so much and lose none of its identity shows how resilient the original architecture has become.
