Hotei, god of happiness and generous abundance, stands smiling with one hand raised in welcome. Hand-modeled in Kutani ware and finished in polychrome enamels softened by age, this approximately 33 cm figure offers a balanced presence for both display and contemplation.
The Piece
Hotei is one of Japan's Seven Gods of Fortune, revered as a symbol of happiness, generosity and contentment, and the joy of sharing abundance. Here he smiles warmly with one hand raised, a gesture often read as blessing, reassurance or welcome, while his exposed belly expresses contentment rather than excess.
The figure is hand-modeled in Kutani ware with layered enamel decoration. The standing pose and raised arm demand careful balance, suggesting experienced workshop craftsmanship, and decorative restraint keeps the modeling and expression central. An aged patina lends depth and warmth to the polychrome surface.
Well suited to collectors of Japanese folk belief, early decorative ceramics and spiritually symbolic sculpture, the figure offers blessing and welcome rooted in lived tradition, at a scale that allows prominent display without demanding monumental space.
