Sculptural A-POC ABLE trousers from the TYPE-O series, in black Steam Stretch fabric where vertical and horizontal pleat textures are laid side by side like patchwork, swelling into soft volumes.
The Piece
A-POC ABLE Issey Miyake revives the idea Issey Miyake and Dai Fujiwara first explored in 1998 with A-POC, A Piece of Cloth: designing a garment and its textile in one process. Led by Yoshiyuki Miyamae, the label works through numbered TYPE projects, each built on a particular technique.
These trousers, TYPE-O 003-2, model AT51FF206, are made in Steam Stretch, a fabric that contracts into relief when steamed. Panels of vertical and horizontal pleating are arranged like patchwork across the legs, so the trousers balloon gently at the thighs and knees and narrow at the ankle, almost like a soft suit of armour. The polyester is partly plant-derived and partly recycled.
There are pockets at both sides and the waist adjusts with an inner drawcord. Because of the way the fabric is made, the size and the pattern of the relief differ slightly from piece to piece.
