Helmut Lang: Vienna, Paris and New York

Helmut Lang opened a studio in Vienna in 1977 and created the Helmut Lang label in Paris in 1986. His shows moved from Paris to New York in 1998. Prada took 51 per cent of the company in 1999 and full ownership in 2004, and Lang left in January 2005. A Japanese company, Link Theory Holdings, bought the brand in 2006. The label is dated in the Encyclopedia.

Pieces join the collection as the archive grows, each with its season, size and condition written into the description. The season on the inside tag is usually the surest way to date a garment.
