Engraved serial number between the lugs of a steel watch case beside a spring bar tool

Rolex Serial Numbers and Production Years

A Rolex serial number is unique to the watch, and it is one of the most useful clues to when the watch was made. Rolex does not publish an official chart, but collectors have assembled a reliable picture from guarantee papers over decades. This guide summarises it.

Where to find the serial

  • Older watches: engraved between the lugs at six o'clock, visible when the bracelet is removed.
  • From the mid-2000s: engraved on the rehaut, the inner ring between the dial and the crystal, at six o'clock, and in some transitional watches in both places.
  • Guarantee card: the serial is printed or written on the card, and should match the watch.

Numeric serials, to 1987

Until 1987, Rolex used numbers that rose steadily, reaching around 9,999,999. A higher number generally means a later watch, which is why collectors can estimate a year from the serial with reasonable confidence.

Letter prefixes, 1987 to about 2010

When the numbers ran out, Rolex began again with a letter followed by six digits. The commonly accepted sequence runs approximately: R (1987), L (1989), E (1990), X and N (1991), C (1992), S (1993), W (1995), T (1996), U (1997), A (1999), P (2000), K (2001), Y (2002), F (2003), D (2005), Z (2006), M (2007), V (2008) and G (2010). These dates are approximate and overlaps are common, because watches were cased and sold over periods of time.

Random serials, from about 2010

Around 2010 Rolex moved to randomised eight-character serials that no longer indicate the year. For these watches, the date on the guarantee card is the best evidence of when the watch was sold.

Using the serial with other evidence

A serial should agree with the reference, the dial, the movement and the bracelet. A serial that suggests a year before the reference existed, or a mix of parts from different decades, needs explanation. Read Rolex Reference Numbers Explained and Buying a Watch from Japan.

Questions collectors ask

Can a serial number be checked with Rolex?

Rolex does not offer a public lookup. An authorised service centre can confirm details when servicing a watch.

Does a polished case affect the serial?

Heavy polishing can soften engravings between the lugs. Crisp numbers suggest a well-kept case.

What if the card and watch disagree?

Do not buy until the difference is explained.
