Patek Philippe: Calatrava, Nautilus and Aquanaut for Collectors
Patek Philippe has made watches in Geneva since 1839 and is regarded by many collectors as the summit of the craft. Its complications fill museums, but three families account for most of the pre-owned watches collectors encounter: the Calatrava, the Nautilus and the Aquanaut. Japan, a long-standing market for the house, holds many examples with complete papers.
Calatrava
The Calatrava was introduced in 1932 with reference 96, a round, simple watch whose clean lines reflected the Bauhaus principle that form follows function. It became the archetype of the dress watch. Calatravas have been made in gold and platinum, with manual and automatic movements, plain and decorated cases, including the hobnail clous de Paris bezel.
- Check: dial originality, case polish, and the correct movement for the reference.
Nautilus
Gérald Genta designed the Nautilus, launched in 1976 as reference 3700, after the porthole of an ocean liner. Like his Royal Oak, it was a luxury sports watch in steel. Reference 5711, introduced in 2006, became one of the most sought-after watches in the world before its production in steel ended in 2021. The embossed horizontal dial is a signature.
- Check: the bracelet, the brushed and polished finishes, the dial colour, and the papers.
Aquanaut
Introduced in 1997, the Aquanaut is a younger, more casual relative of the Nautilus, with a rounded octagonal case and a composite strap embossed with the same chequered pattern as its dial.
- Check: the strap, which wears and is often replaced; original straps add value.
Papers and the archives
Patek Philippe watches are sold with a certificate of origin, and since 2009 with the Patek Philippe Seal standard. For older watches without papers, the house will issue an Extract from the Archives, confirming production details. Japanese owners often keep the purchase receipt and service records as well.
Questions collectors ask
Is a Calatrava a good first Patek Philippe?
Many collectors think so. It is the purest expression of the house's style.
Why did the Nautilus become so sought after?
Limited supply, celebrity, and the rise of luxury sports watches, building on a design that had aged extremely well.
Does an Extract from the Archives guarantee authenticity?
It confirms the production record of a serial number. The watch itself still needs examination.
