Audemars Piguet Royal Oak: The Jumbo, the 15500 and the Offshore
In 1972 Audemars Piguet launched a steel sports watch at the price of a gold dress watch. Designed by Gérald Genta, the Royal Oak had an octagonal bezel fixed with eight hexagonal screws, a bracelet that flowed from the case and a dial textured in a fine grid. It was a gamble that redefined luxury watchmaking. Today the Royal Oak is one of the most sought-after watches in the world, and Japan's pre-owned market offers well-documented examples.
The Jumbo lineage
- 5402 (1972): the original, 39 mm and remarkably thin, with an automatic movement based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre. Early examples are known by series letters.
- 15202: the long-running successor, produced from 2000 until 2021, faithful to the original proportions.
- 16202: introduced in 2022 with a new ultra-thin calibre, for the model's fiftieth anniversary.
Collectors call these watches the Jumbo for their size in 1972, though 39 mm now seems modest.
The everyday Royal Oak
- 15300 (2005): 39 mm with a date and an in-house movement.
- 15400 (2012): enlarged to 41 mm.
- 15500 (2019): 41 mm with a newer movement and a refined dial.
The Offshore
Introduced in 1993 and designed by Emmanuel Gueit, the Royal Oak Offshore made the case bigger, bolder and more sporting, with rubber details and chronographs. It was controversial at launch and became a fixture of the 2000s. Many references exist, including steel, ceramic, carbon and gold versions.
The dial
The Royal Oak's textured dial is called tapisserie. Petite tapisserie appears on the original Jumbo; grande tapisserie on most later models. Check that the pattern is crisp and uniform, and that the printing and indices are unrefinished.
What to check
- Bevels and brushing: the Royal Oak's alternating brushed and polished surfaces are easily spoiled by polishing.
- Bracelet: stretch, links and clasp; the bracelet is integral to the design and value.
- Papers: guarantee card or certificate, and an extract from the archives where available.
- Service: date and place of the last service.
Questions collectors ask
Is a 15202 still collectible after the 16202?
Yes. Many collectors prefer the 15202's long-proven movement and its classic proportions.
Is the Offshore a Royal Oak?
Yes, a sporting branch of the family with its own following.
Can a polished case be restored?
Skilled refinishing can restore lines, but every polish removes metal. Unpolished cases are preferred.
