takashi-murakami-baby-panda-gathering-wai-hand-signed
Takashi Murakami Baby Panda Gathering (Wāi) Hand-Signed Silkscreen, Edition of 100, Pink Sakura Field

Where Murakami's flowers operate as systems, his baby pandas are individual presences. In Baby Panda Gathering (わーい, Wāi) a cluster of them drifts across a pink sakura field, read through their relationships rather than as single icons. Hand-signed and numbered from an edition of 100, acquired through Tonari no Zingaro.

The Piece

A refined example from Murakami's character-driven body of work, the silkscreen groups the artist's baby panda figures, rendered in multi-tonal expression, across a delicately patterned sakura field. The emphasis falls on individual character presence and relational placement: each panda has slight variations of posture and expression, and grouped together they become a micro-community, interacting through placement and orientation rather than narrative action. The viewer reads not one panda but the relationships between them.

The pink floral ground is not passive decoration. It works as a soft structural grid, echoing traditional Japanese surface patterning while diffusing the visual weight of the characters. Gentler than the rigid geometry of a monogram canvas, its repetition sets the pandas in a lighter atmosphere, so the composition feels less anchored and more floating, as if the characters inhabit a suspended emotional space.

Silkscreen gives sharp edge definition, saturated color blocks and precise layering, which matters for a character work that depends on facial and expressive detail; here each figure keeps its clarity even at close range. At ED100 the work circulates more selectively than higher-edition floral prints, and it speaks to Murakami core collectors seeking variation beyond the flower systems, collectors of the panda iconography, and interiors suited to softer, more playful compositions. Not aggressive and not monumental, it is the kind of piece that stays in memory after viewing.

Details

Artist: Takashi Murakami (b. 1962)

Title: Baby Panda Gathering (わーい, Wāi)

Studio: Kaikai Kiki; Tonari no Zingaro distribution channel

Medium: Silkscreen print, high-fidelity pigment layering

Color: Multi-tonal baby pandas on a pink sakura-patterned field

Measurements: Image approx. 412.5 × 412.5 mm · Sheet approx. 512.5 × 512.5 mm

Edition: ED100, hand-signed and numbered

Provenance: Acquired through Tonari no Zingaro

Condition

Well preserved, with the signature intact.

Clean surface clarity and strong chromatic presence across the floral ground and character forms.

Authenticity & Care

Hand-signed and numbered from the edition of 100 and acquired through Tonari no Zingaro, within Murakami's official distribution channel.
