Nearly two meters long and supplied with its fitted box, the scroll holds a dramatic yet still presence.

The Piece

This vintage Japanese kakejiku depicts a seated Buddha rendered in luminous gold-toned linework against a deep black background. The serene figure sits among stylized celestial clouds beneath an expansive circular halo, with fine golden rays radiating outward across the dark field. The folds of the robes, facial features, clouds and halo emerge through light rather than conventional color, and the Buddha's calm expression and symmetrical radiance create a contemplative focal point.

The central artwork is mounted in the traditional hanging-scroll format, surrounded by warm bronze-gold textile decorated with repeating Buddhist-inspired motifs and framed by rich rust-red brocade that adds depth to the restrained palette, with hanging cords and a lower scroll rod. An inscription and two red seals appear at the lower left of the artwork, and a fitted storage box is included. The large vertical format suits a meditation room, Buddhist altar, study, tea room or Japanese-inspired interior.

Details

Subject: Seated Buddha among celestial clouds, with circular halo and radiating golden lines

Era: Vintage

Origin: Japan

Format: Hanging scroll, kakejiku; large vertical format

Material: Gold-toned pigment on a dark textile or paper-like surface (apparent); bronze-gold textile mounting with rust-red brocade border

Color: Black and gold, with bronze-gold and rust-red mounting

Markings: Inscription and two red seals at lower left

Measurements: Complete scroll 196 × 67.5 cm · Main artwork 124.5 × 48.7 cm (approximate, measured by hand)

Included: Fitted storage box, 75.5 × 7.5 × 8 cm

Condition

A vintage scroll with natural signs of age, storage, handling and previous display.

These may include light creasing, surface waviness, small marks, toning, fading, or wear to the artwork, textile mounting, hanging cords and scroll components.

The photographs show the actual piece and form an important part of the condition record; colors may vary slightly with lighting and screen settings.

Authenticity & Care

The identity of the Buddha, the artist, the inscription, the date and the religious affiliation have not been professionally authenticated, and the technique is not established: the image is not guaranteed to be entirely hand-painted, printed, made with gold leaf or produced by any particular historical process.
