vintage-japanese-koi-fish-hanging-scroll
Pergamino colgante kakejiku de tres koi, carpas doradas y carbón sobre montaje de ondas verde salvia, firmado con sello rojo, con caja

Three koi carp move through a spacious vertical field in this vintage Japanese kakejiku: one luminous golden-yellow fish above two in charcoal gray. Restrained negative space, a sage-green wave-pattern mount and a fitted storage box give the signed scroll a calm yet quietly uplifting presence.

The Piece

The curved central fish lends a gentle sense of movement to the otherwise quiet, open background. The artwork is surrounded by a pale sage-green textile mounting decorated with a subtle repeating wave pattern and finished in the traditional hanging-scroll format. An artist's signature and red seal appear at the lower right.

Koi are widely associated across East Asian visual culture with perseverance, vitality, advancement, resilience and good fortune. The Dragon Gate legend, which originated in China and later became known throughout East Asia, tells of a carp that overcomes powerful currents and becomes a dragon on reaching the top of the falls; koi imagery has carried ideas of ambition and endurance through adversity ever since. Here the golden and dark fish strike a compelling balance between brightness, strength, movement and tranquility.

Naturalistic fish imagery, muted green textile and warm golden accents suit a home office, study, entryway, tea room, meditation area, living room, ryokan or hospitality setting, or a Japanese, minimalist or Zen-inspired interior. The scroll also makes a meaningful gift for a koi enthusiast, a graduate, a business owner or anyone beginning a new chapter.

Details

Era: Vintage

Origin: Japan

Format: Kakejiku (hanging scroll), vertical composition with generous negative space

Subject: Three koi carp: one golden-yellow, two charcoal-gray

Signature: Artist's signature and red seal at lower right

Mounting: Pale sage-green textile with subtle repeating wave motif; hanging cord and lower scroll rod

Included: Fitted storage box

Condition

Vintage and pre-owned, with natural signs of age, storage, previous display and handling; it should not be expected to look factory new.

Light toning, creasing, surface waviness, small marks, or wear to the mounting and scroll components may be present where visible.

The photographs show the actual piece and form an important part of the description; colors may vary slightly with lighting and monitor settings.

Authenticity & Care

Signed with a red seal at lower right; the precise painting or printing technique has not been independently verified.
