Play as Power: Nigo, A Bathing Ape and the Irony of Harajuku

Harajuku’s great discovery was that seriousness is not the only route to authority. Nigo’s A Bathing Ape, Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Goodenough and the small shops around them built reputations on jokes, quotations and limited runs, and the clothing industry has been learning from them ever since. This essay follows that idea of play as power, from the back streets behind Omotesando to a Paris fashion house, and corrects some of the stories that have grown up around it.

Ura-Harajuku

The back streets of Jingumae filled with small shops during the 1990s, and the 1990s names are now a canon. Hiroshi Fujiwara began Goodenough in 1990 (one account says the late 1980s). Nigo’s A Bathing Ape dates from 1993, and Nowhere, the shop he opened with Jun Takahashi on 1 April 1993, was its first home. Neighborhood followed in 1994 and WTAPS in 1996 (or 1997). The wider picture is in the Pop Cool-ture Timeline.

The column that made the movement

‘Last Orgy’ was a column in the magazine Takarajima, written by Fujiwara and Kan Takagi; it was not a shop and not a label, although both are often described that way. ‘Last Orgy 2’ was a later project by Nigo and Takahashi from the early 1990s, and in 2022 Human Made revived the name for a collection. The point matters for what followed: Ura-Harajuku grew out of a shared reading list and a shared record collection, and the clothes came afterwards.

Scarcity as method

Small production runs and limited distribution rewarded early arrival. The strategy was an irony in itself: street clothes sold with the rarity of art. The ape head and the camouflage travelled from Tokyo to the world, as our streetwear field guide describes, and the buyers who followed became the first generation of streetwear collectors.

Collaboration as grammar

Fujiwara’s Fragment Design, begun in 2003, made the collaboration a form of authorship. Nigo’s own collaborations ran from labels to houses: with Pharrell Williams he co-founded Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream in 2003, though Williams was never a co-owner of A Bathing Ape; and the mastermind JAPAN collaboration ‘mastermind vs A Bathing Ape’ appeared in autumn/winter 2018. The principle is that a brand is a conversation.

Human Made and Kenzo

Nigo went on to found Human Made, which looks back to vintage American clothing, as described in Nigo and Human Made. On 15 September 2021 he was announced as creative director of Kenzo, and he was still in post in January 2026. It is a notable circle: Kenzo Takada was one of the first Japanese designers to build a house in Paris, and a Harajuku founder now leads it. See Kenzo Takada.

Reading the clothes

  • Early seasons carry the most value; look for the original labels and construction.
  • Collaborations with Nike, Adidas and the luxury houses form their own category.
  • Condition. Prints can crack and fade; check the graphics and the cuffs.
  • Sizing. Japanese sizes run small; compare flat measurements.

Why Japan

The first decade of Ura-Harajuku was sold across a few counters in a few streets, and many owners kept their pieces. Tokyo therefore remains a rich place to find the early examples.
