Vintage Citizen Watches: Parawater, Chronomaster and the Light-Powered Revolution
Citizen is the other great name of Japanese watchmaking. Where Seiko is famous for Grand Seiko and divers, Citizen built its reputation on reliability, innovation and value. Vintage Citizens are still undervalued compared with their Seiko rivals, which makes them an appealing field for collectors.
Origins
Citizen grew from the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, founded in Tokyo in 1918. Its first pocket watch, in 1924, was named Citizen by the then mayor of Tokyo, who hoped it would become a watch that every citizen could own. The name became the company's.
Landmark watches
- Parawater (1959): Japan's first water-resistant wristwatch.
- Chronomaster (1960s): Citizen's high-grade line, finely finished and precise.
- Crystal Seven (1965): a popular automatic with a distinctive faceted crystal.
- 1970s automatics: colourful sunburst dials, chronographs and divers, many made only for the Japanese market.
- Light power (1976): Citizen introduced one of the first analogue quartz watches powered by light, the beginning of what became Eco-Drive.
What collectors look for
- Dials: original, unfaded dials, especially colourful 1970s sunbursts.
- Cases: unpolished, with crisp lines.
- Japanese domestic models: day wheels in Japanese and models never exported.
- Divers and chronographs: early Challenge Divers and 1970s chronographs have a growing following.
What to check
- The caseback reference and movement match.
- The crown and crystal are correct, or honestly described as replaced.
- Timekeeping and the date of the last service.
- Water resistance: assume none on a vintage watch until tested.
Questions collectors ask
Are vintage Citizens a good investment?
They are collected first for pleasure. Prices for the best examples have been rising, but they remain accessible.
Can early light-powered watches still run?
Many can, though their cells and capacitors may need replacing by a specialist.
How do they compare with vintage Seiko?
Quality is comparable. Citizen's vintage market is smaller, so good examples can cost less.
