Juvenile Delinquent: Fusion of Modern Japanese Wagara X Hip Hop x Gangsta Fashion

Submitted by on May 13, 2010 – 5:16 amNo Comment

One of the brands that we carry and officially represent in the English Speaking World is the rapidly growing brand called Juvenile Delinquent. The name of the brand itself undeniably connotes violence or some sort of yakuza or yakkie-flick related gangsta stuff but if you delve yourself into the radical clothing creations and concepts of this brand, you would just find that it is something very cool, trendy and Japanese.

Up until now, “Wagara” 和柄fashion is just a phenomenon in Japan associated with the yankie (street brags) or yakuza circles who usually dress like them as you can see just like in the movies of Beat Takeshi in his blockbusters such as the “Brother” etc. In the few years, wagara of Japanese pattern-inspired clothing experienced a boom when people began appreciating the traditional elements like Kamon crests, Buddhist arts combined with the modern hip-hop inspired apparel and a little bit of pop and retro flavors that sends nostalgic feelings when one wears them.

The result is that the brand evolved not to be just labeled as simply gangsta fashion but cool in the extreme sense and taste of this wagara genre. No doubt, this will continue spreading as more and more people appreciate J-Music and J-Hiphop and Japanese culture in general because the designs are becoming more attuned to the traditional elements such as Nihon-ga (Japanese style painting and art), Shunga (Erotic Art), Shodo (Calligraphy), Shishu (Embroidery), Samurai Insignia and Symbols further inspiring the “History” Boom in Japan as more and more people are becoming intrigued by the ways of the Samurai and lifestyle of the people living during the Edo Period. This is also known as the Sengoku Boom or 戦国ブーム.

For example, the popular jeans and denim line (resembling Evisu, Momotaro and other Japan-made jeans and denim) incorporates traditional aethetic elements of the Japanese culture like the Kamon crests and kimono patterns and prints.

These are traditional Japanese construction worker pants and upper jumper setup jacket that is modern and inspired by the wagara patterns made in silk and cotton.

These bags are released by the Juvenile Delinquent Brand (Concept: Gangsta Yakuza Street/Hip Hop Fashion) and really nicely designed Wagara bags. Prices range from $150 to $227. There are many variations of this series, perfect to go with the usual day-to-day fashion as variant and accent. Great Japanese patterns reminding of the beauty of the Kimono and Geishas.
